Fruit Seller Murdered During Village Mediation

Rajair, Madaripur, Bangladesh – A fruit trader was fatally attacked during a “salish” (village mediation) meeting in Rajair Upazila, Madaripur, in what authorities have described as a premeditated assault linked to a minor theft dispute. At least five others, including the victim’s son-in-law, sustained injuries during the incident, which subsequently triggered further violence in the locality.

The attack took place on Tuesday morning in the Midpara area of Amgram Union. Eyewitnesses reported that the perpetrators, supporters of a rival family, invited the victims under the pretext of mediation, only to launch a violent assault. Following the attack, enraged locals reportedly set fire to four residential houses belonging to the accused, who fled the scene.

The deceased has been identified as Zakir Sheikh, son of Nurjaman Sheikh from Majumdarkandi village, a fruit trader who operated near the Rajair bus stand.

Background of the Dispute

The confrontation reportedly originated after a theft was reported at the home of Sohel Bepari, brother of local trader Rasel Bepari. The victim family filed a written complaint with Rajair Police Station. On Tuesday, local community elders arranged a mediation session with the family of Majid Khan, ostensibly to resolve the theft dispute. During the meeting, Rasel Bepari was attacked. When others, including women, attempted to intervene, four additional people were assaulted.

Subsequently, under the guise of another mediation, Zakir Sheikh, father-in-law of Rasel, was summoned to the attackers’ residence. Upon his arrival, he was reportedly stabbed by Majid Khan, his sons, and supporters. Injured victims were rushed to Rajair Upazila Health Complex, where Dr. Al Yasa declared Zakir Sheikh dead on arrival.

Aftermath and Local Response

Following the attack, the mob set fire to four houses belonging to the accused. Police and fire service teams arrived promptly to control the fires and restore order. Additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain security and prevent further unrest.

He stated, “We are working to apprehend all those involved and ensure justice. Additional police have been deployed to maintain peace in the locality.”

The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety and reliability of village mediation practices, traditionally intended to resolve disputes peacefully. Local residents expressed shock and fear, warning that minor conflicts should not escalate into lethal violence.
