In a significant drug enforcement operation, a married couple has been apprehended in Gopalganj for possession of a large quantity of cannabis. The seizure, totalling 16 kilograms, was carried out by the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) in the village of Guptorgati, Mukshudpur Upazila, on Sunday afternoon, 14 December.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Borhan Sheikh, 41, and his wife Jamila Begum, 34, residents of Guptorgati. According to the DNC, the arrest followed a tip-off regarding a substantial illegal drug transaction in the area. Acting on this intelligence, officers conducted a targeted raid at the couple’s residence.
Mohammad Nabi Newaz, Assistant Director of the Gopalganj District Office of the DNC, confirmed the operation and described the seizure as a major blow to local drug trafficking networks. “Based on confidential information, we launched an operation in Guptorgati. During the raid at Borhan Sheikh’s home, we recovered 16 kilograms of cannabis,” he stated. He added that the couple was subsequently handed over to Mukshudpur Police Station and that formal charges have been filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
The operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the DNC to curb the distribution and sale of illegal drugs in rural regions, where enforcement can often be challenging due to dispersed populations and close-knit communities. Authorities emphasised that such large-scale seizures not only prevent drugs from reaching the local market but also serve as a deterrent to others involved in illicit trade.
Local residents expressed a mixture of shock and relief upon learning of the arrest. “We never suspected such a quantity could be stored right in our village. It is reassuring that the authorities acted swiftly,” said one neighbour, who requested anonymity.
The DNC has also urged the public to report suspicious activities, stressing that community cooperation is vital in combating the spread of narcotics. Investigators are currently probing the origins of the seized cannabis and whether the couple is connected to a wider network operating in Gopalganj and neighbouring districts.
