Government Launches Sports Probe

The Government of Bangladesh has initiated a stringent inquiry into longstanding allegations of irregularities and politicisation within the country’s sports administration, with particular focus on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The move comes amid growing concerns over claims of unlawful recruitment practices and preferential treatment reportedly dating back to 2008.

During a session of the National Parliament on Sunday, the State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, stated that multiple allegations had emerged suggesting that politically influenced appointments had been made within the BCB over the years. According to him, such appointments were not limited to employment alone but may also have extended to administrative influence and control over voting structures within the organisation.

He further informed lawmakers that a comprehensive investigation committee will be formed to systematically review developments in the sports sector since 2008. The government’s stated objective is to restore transparency, professionalism, and political neutrality within sports governance institutions.

Responding to a parliamentary question raised by the Member of Parliament for Bogura-4, Mosharraf Hossain, the minister said that preliminary information regarding irregularities and inconsistencies in recruitment processes had already been collected. He added that scrutiny of certain officials is underway, with formal investigations expected to follow.

The minister also indicated that preliminary observations had revealed unusual increases in the personal wealth of some officials and employees associated with the BCB. In such cases, he noted, the government may seek assistance from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry. He expressed confidence that a transparent investigation would ultimately bring the full facts to light.

The government has outlined three key objectives guiding the initiative: establishing a transparent recruitment system, identifying past irregularities, and ensuring appropriate administrative or legal action against those found responsible.
