Government Medicines Found in Brahmaputra River

In a surprising discovery in Gafargaon Upazila, local fishermen retrieved two sacks of government-issued medicines from the Brahmaputra River while fishing on Wednesday morning, 11 March. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. near the Tetulia Mosque area, where the fishermen initially noticed two large, tightly tied jute sacks partially submerged in the river. Upon hauling them to the surface, they discovered the sacks contained various medicines supplied to government hospitals.

Local witnesses suggested that the sacks had likely been submerged in the river for a considerable period. Fortunately, the packaging of the medicines remained intact, preventing significant damage to the contents. Following the discovery, the local police promptly arrived at the scene, seized the sacks, and transported them to the police station for further investigation.

Dr Mohammad Jamal Uddin, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, stated, “From preliminary examination, the medicines date back to 2023. It appears that someone may have deliberately discarded them into the river. The police are conducting a thorough investigation, and appropriate legal measures will be taken. Our health department is ready to provide any necessary assistance in this matter.”

The Officer-in-Charge of Gafargaon Police Station, A. S. M. Atikur Rahman, added, “A general diary has been filed regarding this incident. Once the investigation concludes, required legal action will be pursued.”
