In a tragic incident in Gaibandha’s Saghata Upazila, a 22-year-old man, Sujan Mia, reportedly took his own life after suffering severe mental distress caused by the rejection from his prospective bride’s family.
The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, 4 April, in North Dighalkandi village of Holodia Union. According to local residents and family members, Sujan had been urging his family to arrange his marriage for an extended period. Despite multiple attempts to arrange meetings with prospective brides, the families on the other side repeatedly declined the proposals for various reasons. The repeated rejections caused Sujan deep emotional pain, gradually leading him into a state of mental instability.
Tensions within his own household reportedly exacerbated his distress. Family members recalled an argument over Sujan’s hair, after which he reportedly ceased communication with his parents for several days. On the night of the incident, he had dinner and retired to his room. The following morning, when family members found him unresponsive after repeated calls, they broke into the room to find him hanging from a ceiling beam.
Sujan’s uncle, Kabel Sarkar, told reporters, “My nephew Sujan had been eager to marry for a long time. We arranged multiple meetings with potential brides, but none of the families approved him. Last night, he ended his life.”
The Saghata police station officer-in-charge, Matiur Rahman, confirmed that no formal complaint was lodged by the family or local residents. “Based on the family’s request, the body was buried without a post-mortem examination. An unnatural death case has been filed at the station,” he added.
