Guardiola urges Haaland to stay confident ahead of Chelsea clash

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has called on his players to keep their heads high ahead of a challenging Premier League encounter with Chelsea this Sunday. The appeal comes after a frustrating goalless draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Thursday night, a result that left City’s key attackers, including Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva, noticeably disappointed.

City had previously inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium last December. However, in the return fixture, Sunderland proved a much tougher opponent. Despite dominating possession and creating several opportunities, Guardiola’s side were unable to find the net. After 19 rounds of the season, City remain four points behind league leaders Arsenal, who have amassed 45 points.

Guardiola addressed his squad ahead of the Chelsea match, acknowledging the dip in morale but stressing the importance of resilience. “The lads are a little frustrated, yes. But when you face a tough match against Chelsea just three days later, we need to remain alert and keep our heads high,” he said.

City controlled 68 per cent of possession at the Stadium of Light and registered 14 shots, yet none found the target. The team struggled to convert opportunities, highlighting finishing issues that Guardiola aims to correct before facing Chelsea, currently fifth in the table with 30 points. Playing at the Etihad gives City a slight advantage, but Guardiola remains cautious.

After the Sunderland game, Guardiola praised the hosts for their performance: “Sunderland are a really strong team, especially physically. In the first half, we were under pressure from their pressing. The second half was much better for us, but we failed to capitalise on the chances inside the box. We missed our finishing touches.”

The recent fixtures underline City’s attacking inconsistencies, yet Guardiola’s call for composure and confidence ahead of the London derby shows his focus on maintaining momentum in the title race.
