Gun Attack on Motaleb Sikder Shakes Local Politics

Khulna city was rocked on Monday when Motaleb Sikder, a prominent leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), was shot at his Sonadanga home in broad daylight. The incident, which occurred just before noon, has left the political community and local residents reeling with shock.

Sikder, who serves as the central organiser for the NCP’s labour wing, National Labour Force, and as Khulna division coordinator, was reportedly preparing for an upcoming regional workers’ meeting. Party insiders suggest that the attack may have been linked to his active role in organising the event.

“The situation is extremely concerning,” said Saif Nawaz, NCP organiser for Khulna city. “Motaleb was working tirelessly to strengthen our party’s labour wing in the region. This attack on him is not just an assault on an individual but an attack on our democratic activities.”

Emergency services arrived promptly, and Sikder was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sonadanga Model Police Station, Animesh Mondal, confirmed the attack and said police teams are investigating the motive and identity of the assailants. “The public’s quick action in bringing him to the hospital likely saved his life. We are reviewing all available evidence,” he said.

Residents of Sonadanga reported a tense atmosphere following the shooting, with many witnessing the incident unfold. Social media platforms have since seen an outpouring of support for Sikder and calls for a swift investigation. Political analysts note that attacks on local political figures, particularly in the lead-up to party events, can escalate tensions within the community.

Authorities are examining surveillance footage from the area and interviewing witnesses to piece together the sequence of events. The NCP has also called for heightened security measures to ensure the safety of its members in Khulna. Despite the attack, the party has vowed to proceed with its planned divisional assembly, signalling resilience and commitment to its political agenda.
