A shocking armed attack occurred in Gazipur, adjacent to the capital Dhaka, on Thursday afternoon targeting a senior political figure. Habib Chowdhury, a senior member of the National Democratic Party (NCP) Gazipur Metropolitan Committee, was fired upon while his motorcycle was forcibly stolen. Remarkably, no one was physically injured during the incident.
According to local authorities and eyewitnesses, the attack took place on 8 January at approximately 1:30 PM in the Mogorkhal Jugitla area under Bosan Police Station jurisdiction. Party officials and witnesses suggest that the assault was premeditated and linked to an online advertisement posted by Chowdhury to sell his motorcycle.
Abdullah Al Muhim, Secretary of the NCP Gazipur Metropolitan Advisory Committee, explained the circumstances:
“Habib Chowdhury had advertised his motorcycle for sale online. A young man, posing as a potential buyer, lured him to a secluded location under the pretext of a test ride. Suddenly, two assailants opened fire and made off with the motorcycle.”
Habib Chowdhury himself described the harrowing experience:
“They offered slightly more than the listed price. When I went to show the motorcycle, one of them took my documents while the other called an accomplice. Suddenly, two shots were fired in my direction.”
Local residents, alarmed by the gunfire, rushed to the scene and promptly informed the police. Muhammad Harun-ur-Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of Bosan Police Station, confirmed that law enforcement responded immediately, secured the area, and initiated an investigation. He added:
“We are actively working to identify the unidentified attackers. Legal action will be taken, and the investigation is ongoing.”
