Gunfire Erupts as Police Confront Alleged Hostage-Takers in Ashulia

Police exchanged gunfire with a group of alleged criminals after responding to reports that a man was being held hostage in Ashulia, Savar, on Saturday. The suspects reportedly opened fire at the officers when they arrived at the scene, prompting police to return fire. The group later managed to flee the area, taking advantage of the confusion.

No casualties or arrests were immediately reported in connection with the incident.

The exchange of gunfire took place at around noon on Saturday (25 July) on the fifth floor of a building at Sharif Market in the Jamgora area of Ashulia. The sound of gunshots reportedly caused panic among local residents and people in the surrounding area. For a while, tension gripped the busy locality, although the situation was brought under control after the gunmen left the scene.

According to police sources, officers from Ashulia Police Station went to the building after receiving information that a man had allegedly been taken hostage by a group of criminals. As the police team reached the location, the suspects reportedly realised that law enforcement officers had arrived and began firing at them.

The attackers allegedly fired around seven to eight rounds, according to police. The officers then returned fire in self-defence. A brief exchange of gunfire followed, after which the suspected criminals fled the building and escaped from the area.

Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Rasheduzzaman confirmed the incident and said police had gone to the location after receiving information about the alleged hostage situation. He said the suspects opened fire after becoming aware of the police presence, prompting officers to retaliate.

Police subsequently launched an operation in and around the area to locate and arrest those involved. However, no arrests had been made by the time of reporting.

The incident has caused concern among residents, particularly because it occurred in a populated commercial area in broad daylight. A shooting inside a market building also raised fears among local people and businesses operating in the vicinity. Residents said the sudden sound of gunfire created panic, with people rushing to safety as the situation unfolded.

Law enforcement officers have continued efforts to identify the suspects and determine their whereabouts. Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged hostage-taking, including the identity of the person who was reportedly being held and the motive behind the incident.

However, details remained unclear about whether the alleged hostage was eventually rescued, how long the person had been held, or what led to the confrontation. Police also did not immediately report any injuries or deaths resulting from the exchange of fire.
