Measles Crisis Persists as Six More Children Die

Bangladesh’s measles situation remains a cause for serious concern, with six more children dying after developing symptoms associated with the disease in the past 24 hours. A further 691 people were either confirmed to have measles or sought medical attention with symptoms consistent with the infection during the same period.

The figures were disclosed in the Directorate General of Health Services’ regular measles surveillance report published on Saturday, 25 July.

According to the report, although six children died after developing suspected measles symptoms over the past day, no additional deaths were recorded among patients with laboratory-confirmed measles. This distinction is being maintained in official reporting to separate deaths involving suspected cases from those definitively attributed to measles.

Between 15 March and 25 July, the number of deaths among patients with suspected measles symptoms reached 721. During the same period, 95 children were reported to have died from confirmed measles. Taken together, the total number of deaths associated with measles and suspected measles cases stood at 816.

The latest daily figures also show that 78 new measles cases were confirmed, while 613 people sought treatment after developing symptoms suspected to be linked to the disease. This brought the combined number of confirmed and suspected cases reported during the 24-hour period to 691.

Hospitals admitted 581 patients during the same period, while 479 patients were discharged after receiving treatment. The fact that new admissions outnumbered discharges suggests that healthcare facilities continue to face a substantial burden as the outbreak persists.

Since 15 March, the health authorities have recorded 122,763 suspected measles cases across the country. Of these, 15,272 have been confirmed as measles infections. A total of 105,298 patients have been admitted to hospitals during the period, while 101,535 have subsequently been discharged.

The scale of the figures underlines the continuing pressure on the country’s healthcare system. The number of hospital admissions recorded in a single day was higher than the number of patients discharged, while the cumulative number of suspected cases has now exceeded 122,000. The deaths of children presenting with measles-like symptoms are particularly concerning from a public health perspective.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that commonly causes fever, cough, a runny nose, red or watery eyes and a characteristic rash. In vulnerable children, the infection can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, dehydration and other severe health problems. The risk can be particularly significant where children are undernourished or have limited access to timely medical care.

Health authorities are reporting suspected and confirmed cases separately, allowing a clearer distinction between patients diagnosed with measles and those who have symptoms but have not yet been confirmed as having the disease. The approach is also intended to provide a more precise picture of the outbreak and its impact on public health.

The latest figures reinforce the need for early detection, prompt medical attention and stronger measures to prevent transmission. Parents and caregivers should seek medical advice promptly if a child develops symptoms such as fever and rash, particularly when accompanied by cough, a runny nose or red eyes. Children suspected of having measles should also be kept away from other children where possible to reduce the risk of further spread, while families should follow the guidance of healthcare professionals.

With hospital admissions continuing at a high level and suspected measles-related deaths still being reported, sustained surveillance, timely treatment and public awareness remain crucial to containing the situation and protecting children from potentially severe complications.
