Hamza Chowdhury Nears Azerbaijan Move After Leicester Exit

Bangladesh national team midfielder Hamza Chowdhury appears set for a new chapter in his club career after spending a significant part of his football journey in England. Reports suggest that Azerbaijan Premier League club Sabah FC are keen to secure his services, with discussions between the player and the club reportedly progressing towards an agreement.

According to reports from Azerbaijani sports media, Hamza is close to ending his long association with Leicester City and joining Sabah FC. However, no official announcement has been made by either the player or the club, meaning the transfer remains subject to the completion of formal procedures.

Sabah FC have reportedly been pursuing Hamza for several weeks. Negotiations are believed to have reached an advanced stage, with both sides said to have reached an understanding over personal terms. If the remaining formalities are completed, the Bangladesh midfielder could be seen wearing the Azerbaijan club’s colours in the upcoming season.

The potential move marks a significant change for Hamza, who has spent most of his professional career in English football. The defensive midfielder came through Leicester City’s youth system and became recognised for his energetic style of play, physical strength and ability to break up opposition attacks.

Although Hamza was not a regular feature in Leicester’s first-team squad last season, he continued gaining experience through loan spells. He spent the previous campaign with Sheffield United, while earlier he also had a temporary stint at Watford. Despite those moves, his most memorable achievements came during his time with Leicester.

Hamza was part of the Leicester squad that won the FA Cup in 2021, securing one of the biggest honours in the club’s history. He also lifted the FA Community Shield in the same year. During the 2023–24 season, he played a role in Leicester’s Championship-winning campaign as the club earned promotion back to the Premier League.

His performances at club level have also helped him establish himself as an important figure for Bangladesh’s national team. After becoming eligible to represent Bangladesh, Hamza’s inclusion brought renewed attention to the country’s football scene, with supporters hoping his European experience would strengthen the national side.

According to transfer market estimates, Hamza’s current market value is around €4 million, reflecting his experience at a high level of European football.

A move to Sabah FC could also provide Hamza with another opportunity to compete on the European stage. The Azerbaijan club, who recently secured the domestic league title, have progressed through the early qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League. If the transfer is completed, Hamza could potentially feature in European qualifying matches, adding another important milestone to his career.

For the Bangladesh midfielder, the proposed switch represents not only a fresh challenge but also a chance to continue his journey in European football beyond England. Fans in Bangladesh will now be waiting for official confirmation as Hamza prepares for what could become the next major step in his professional career.
