Police have recovered the hanging body of Dhaka University (DU) student Sumi Akter (26) from her own home in Mirpur, Kushtia. Her body was recovered from her house in Ambaria village of the upazila on Monday (24 November) morning.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Police Station, Md. Mominul Islam, confirmed the matter.
Sumi Akter was the daughter of farmer Golap Rahman of Ambaria village. She was a student of the Sanskrit Department at Dhaka University.
According to police and family sources, Sumi Akter was congenitally afflicted with Fibrous Dysplasia. She completed her Honours and Master’s degrees from the Sanskrit Department of the Faculty of Arts at Dhaka University. For the past month and a half, she was preparing for a job from her home in Ambaria, Mirpur Upazila, Kushtia. Her bones were deteriorating rapidly, and despite multiple surgeries, her physical condition did not improve. Due to intense pain, restricted mobility, and continuous weakness, she was under mental stress. Unable to bear the severe suffering in her body caused by the Fibrous Dysplasia, she committed suicide by tying a rope to a bamboo rafter in her room and hanging herself around 4:30 am on Monday. Upon receiving the news, the police reached the scene, recovered Sumi’s body, and conducted an inquest.
Quoting the family, Md. Rafiquzzaman, the In-Charge of Majihat Police Outpost, said that she was studying in her room until 3 am last night. Later, when they called her for Fajr prayers, her room door was found closed. They then found her hanging from the rafter of the room.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Police Station, Md. Mominul Islam, stated that the girl was suffering from a rare disease. She was receiving treatment with the help of her classmates and various people in the village. However, last night she felt immense pain in her body. Later, when she was found hanging from the rafter of her room in the morning, the police were informed. It is being speculated that the girl committed suicide. As there was no complaint regarding the incident, the body was handed over to the family without a post-mortem examination.
