According to experts, when buying eggplants, first inspect the surface for any holes or spots. If the skin appears smooth and spotless, the vegetable is less likely to have worms inside.

Always select eggplants that are free from cracks or dark patches. Small spots or holes may indicate that the eggplant has begun to rot internally and could contain worms. Therefore, pick only those with shiny, clean skin.

While purchasing, gently press the eggplant. If it yields slightly, it means it is tender and has fewer seeds. However, if it feels hard and does not give in, it may have a high seed count or even worms. Hence, testing for firmness is crucial.

When choosing eggplants, lift them to check their weight. Heavier ones often contain more seeds or have rotten portions inside. Therefore, opt for eggplants that appear large but feel light when held. Such eggplants are typically fresh, have fewer seeds, and offer a better flavour.

Observe the outer skin carefully. If it appears wrinkled, dry, or dull, the eggplant is probably old. Likewise, if the colour looks pale or faded, it is not fresh. Choose dark, shiny, and smooth eggplants, as these are less prone to worms or decay.

Pay attention to the stem as well. Whether round or long, all eggplants have stems. If the stem is green, the eggplant is fresh. But if it is dark or dry, it is old—usually 3 to 4 days since harvest—and may harbour a worm infestation.

Finally, consider the size of the eggplant. Always opt for smaller ones, as larger eggplants tend to have more seeds and a higher chance of being worm-infested. Smaller eggplants are not only fresher but also taste more delicious when cooked. Thus, size matters when selecting the right eggplant.
