Human Chain Protests Teacher Attack in Madaripur

A human chain was formed in Madaripur on Monday in protest against a violent attack on a schoolteacher, sparking renewed concern over the safety of educators and students in educational institutions across the district. Teachers, students, guardians and local residents joined the demonstration, demanding swift justice and stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The protest took place on Monday afternoon (12 January) in the Charmugaria area of Madaripur Sadar upazila, in front of Charmugaria Merchant High School. Speakers at the human chain alleged that earlier that morning, Assistant Mathematics Teacher Anadi Biswas was subjected to a sudden and brutal attack at the school gate by a group of miscreants.

According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants ambushed Mr Biswas as he arrived at the school premises and struck him repeatedly with a hammer. He sustained a serious head injury and collapsed on the spot. Hearing his cries for help, local residents rushed towards the scene, prompting the attackers to flee. The injured teacher was subsequently rescued and taken to the Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital, where he remains under medical supervision.

Following the incident, police officers visited the scene and launched an investigation. The attack has triggered widespread outrage among the local community, with protesters describing it as a direct assault on the dignity and safety of the teaching profession.

Addressing the human chain, speakers insisted that all those responsible must be identified and arrested without delay. They stressed that educational institutions should be safe spaces, free from intimidation and violence. Participants also called for adequate security arrangements to be ensured for teachers and students during school hours, particularly while commuting to and from school. Protesters warned that if their demands were not met, they would announce broader and more sustained protest programmes in the coming days.

Teachers at the demonstration expressed fear that such incidents could discourage educators from performing their duties with confidence. Guardians, meanwhile, voiced anxiety over the safety of their children, stating that violence in and around schools undermines the learning environment and erodes public trust in the education system.

Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad said that law enforcement agencies were making every effort to bring the perpetrators to justice. He confirmed that CCTV footage from the area had already been collected and that multiple investigation teams were working on the case. The OC expressed confidence that the attackers would be arrested soon.

The incident has reignited a broader debate about law and order around educational institutions in the district, with civil society members urging authorities to take preventive measures rather than reacting only after violent incidents occur.
