Human Trafficking Claims Twelve Sunamganj Lives

Twelve residents of Sunamganj have tragically lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to reach Europe through illegal channels, drawn by traffickers’ promises of a better future. Some were persuaded voluntarily, while others were coerced into risking the perilous journey.

Among the victims was 20-year-old Fahim Ahmad from Kabirnagar village in Boglabazar Union, Dowarabazar Upazila. Fahim’s family, through a relative, arranged for him to travel via Libya to Greece. He perished when the overcrowded boat sank. Local sources reported that Fahim’s paternal uncle, Jamal Uddin, coordinated the illegal passage, while another brother, Abdur Rahim, also known as Jasim Uddin, is currently in Libya. Both men have ongoing cases at the Sunamganj Anti-Human Trafficking Tribunal.

Villagers revealed that Fahim was part of a group sent abroad by the same network. One family reportedly paid 1.4 million taka to the traffickers. Attempts to contact Jamal Uddin for comment were unsuccessful. Fahim’s uncle, Taijul Islam, stated, “We did not approve of sending Fahim abroad illegally,” but declined to provide further details.

Local officials have emphasised the growing threat of human trafficking in the region. Mohammad Milon Khan, chairman of Boglabazar Union Parishad, said, “The aspiration for a better life makes many young people vulnerable to traffickers, who exploit their hopes for financial gain.”

District Commissioner Mohammad Ilias Mia told the press that Upazila Nirbahi Officers in Jagannathpur and Dirai have compiled lists of known traffickers and handed them to law enforcement. “Investigations are ongoing in all upazilas. We are supporting affected families, particularly those in severe financial hardship,” he added.

Deowan Gias Chowdhury of the Sunamganj Citizens’ Awareness Committee (SONAC) warned that trafficking networks are active across the district, particularly in Jagannathpur, Chatak, Shantiganj, Dirai, and Dowarabazar. He urged the community to take a strong stance against traffickers and called for stricter legal measures.

Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain confirmed that the police are compiling lists of traffickers using confidential information and preparing cases. “Where families are unable to lodge complaints, the police will act as complainants. Legal action will begin shortly,” he said.
