Husband Allegedly Tortures Wife with Hot Iron Rod in Gaibandha

A 28-year-old housewife, Sharmin Akter, has been brutally tortured by her husband in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha. The accused, 35-year-old Alamgir Hossain, allegedly burned her face and other parts of her body with a hot iron rod and cut her left ankle with scissors following a minor dispute.

The incident took place on Monday (November 10) in Chhoto Daudpur village under Jamalpur Union. The following morning, Sharmin’s mother, Sufia Begum, lodged a formal complaint at the Sadullapur Police Station.

Seriously injured Sharmin Akter is currently receiving treatment at the Sadullapur Upazila Health Complex, while her husband, Alamgir Hossain, has been absconding since the crime.

Sharmin reported that she married Alamgir four years ago, and since then, he has frequently assaulted her over trivial matters. On the day of the incident, a quarrel erupted over food. During the altercation, Alamgir severely burned her with the hot rod and cut her ankle, causing her to lose consciousness. Neighbours, assisted by the village police, rescued her and arranged for her hospitalisation.

Sufia Begum, Sharmin’s mother, confirmed that Alamgir fled after torturing her daughter, and villagers, with the help of local police, took Sharmin to the hospital.

Dr. S. M. Shafiq Arefin, the duty doctor at the Health Complex, stated that the patient has multiple burn injuries and suffered significant blood loss from the ankle cut. She is currently in a state of shock but is receiving necessary medical care.

Taj Uddin Khondaker, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadullapur Police Station, confirmed that police teams were dispatched to the hospital and Chhoto Daudpur village immediately after receiving the information. Preparations for officially filing a case are currently underway.
