A man has fled after allegedly killing his wife in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur, reportedly informing a neighbour by telephone that he had strangled her and requesting that the body be recovered.
Police recovered the body of 16-year-old housewife Jharnna Akter from a locked room in a rented house in the Jonglapara area of Beriderchala village under Shreepur Municipality at around 10:30 pm on Saturday. Officers later confirmed that the room was on the second floor of the building.
According to local residents, Jharnna Akter was the daughter of Hamidul Islam of Jonglapara village. She married Md. Opu, a young man who works as a minibus driver, approximately two years ago. The marriage was reportedly contracted according to their own choice. Following the marriage, the couple lived in a rented accommodation at the house of one Masud Mia in the Jonglapara area.
House owner Lovely Akter stated that on the evening of the incident, tenant Tania received a phone call from Opu. During the call, Opu allegedly informed her that he had killed his wife Jharnna and requested that someone come to recover the body. Following the call, local residents contacted the police.
Police arrived at the scene and broke open the locked room on the second floor, where they recovered Jharnna Akter’s body. The body was subsequently taken for legal procedures.
Jharnna’s father, Hamidul Islam, said that since the marriage two years ago, his daughter had maintained no contact with her family. He stated that he was informed on Saturday night that his daughter’s body had been recovered from a rented house. He alleged that Opu had killed his daughter and then fled the scene, and demanded justice.
Shreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Nasir Ahmed confirmed the recovery of the body. He said police broke open the locked room after receiving information, conducted an initial inquest, and sent the body to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for post-mortem examination. He also confirmed that the accused husband, Opu, had fled and that efforts were underway to arrest him. Legal proceedings are in progress.
