Emerging from Copenhagen’s underground music scene, rising artist Melody Gazal is set to make a striking entrance with her full-length debut album, Idol Melodis. Scheduled for release on 6 March 2026 under the Anyines label, the album has already attracted attention from both critics and early listeners for its eclectic yet introspective sound.
A graduate of the prestigious Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC), Gazal fuses her Iranian heritage with the melodic textures of 1980s pop, crafting songs that feel at once diverse and profoundly personal. The album’s lead single, “Numb,” foregrounds Gazal’s meditative vocals against a backdrop of major-key guitar strums, creating a reflective sonic landscape. The track captures a period of personal transformation, during which Gazal grappled with self-alienation and complex relationships.
She recalls, “My guitarist, Peter Bruhn, sent me a beautiful major-folk guitar progression, and I instinctively began singing along. My melodies quickly darkened, and the song became a meditation—observing life from afar and questioning myself: ‘Who am I now? Numb?’” Portions of the song are performed in Farsi, adding a layer of introspective intimacy that highlights the subtleties of human connection.
Born in Copenhagen to Iranian parents, Gazal was exposed to music from a young age through cultural events. Early influences ranged from pre-revolutionary Iranian hits to 1980s and 1990s Los Angeles pop, as well as mainstream VH1 and MTV artists such as Dido and Celine Dion. Encouraged by her mother, she studied piano, but her career stalled for nearly a decade as she navigated personal reflection and the challenges of “otherness” in a predominantly white environment.
Reconnecting with music, Gazal enrolled at RMC, a crucial hub for contemporary Danish music where talents like ML Buch, Astrid Sonne, and Clarissa Connelly have flourished. Idol Melodis gradually took shape, with its initial drum sketches originating as part of her conservatory thesis.
The album features a range of collaborators whose contributions enrich the listening experience:
