Independent Committee Formed Over BCB Election Irregularities

The National Sports Council (NSC) has established an independent investigation committee to probe alleged irregularities in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections. The committee has been tasked with submitting its preliminary findings to the Ministry of Youth and Sports within the next 15 working days.

Background of Allegations

On 8 March, prominent cricketer Tamim Iqbal and several other club cricket leaders formally approached the NSC, citing concerns over the transparency of the BCB election process. Key allegations include:

  • Councillorship Disputes – Irregularities in the nomination and selection of electoral members.

  • Selection and Postal Voting Process – Discontent regarding the Dhaka-based club selection and the postal ballot system.

  • Election Boycott – A significant portion of the election, including Tamim Iqbal, was boycotted.

Tamim Iqbal stated, “Of the 76 clubs, 50 have reported that selectors were not properly appointed. Major clubs like Abahani and Mohammedan agree. We have raised our concerns through proper channels, but disagreements among clubs have disrupted several leagues, leaving matches unplayed. The Board must explain why competitions are halted.”

Composition of the Investigation Committee

The NSC-appointed committee comprises five members, combining expertise from the judiciary, law enforcement, sports journalism, and legal practice. Justice A.K.M. Asaduzzaman, a retired Supreme Court judge, has been appointed as the committee chairperson.

The committee has been charged with conducting a fully independent and transparent investigation, scrutinising the electoral procedures, voting mechanisms, complaints from clubs and councillors, and any potential irregularities.

Significance for Bangladesh Cricket

This initiative represents a critical step for Bangladeshi cricket. For years, numerous club officials and players have questioned the legitimacy of the current board. The committee’s findings are expected to pave the way for a more transparent and efficient election process in future BCB polls.

Notably, this is the first time that a committee combining government officials, police officers, journalists, and legal professionals will collectively oversee a cricket election investigation. Upon release, the report is anticipated to enhance transparency, trust, and fairness within the national cricket community.
