Indian Cricketer Faces Serious Domestic Allegations

The Indian Premier League (IPL), renowned as the wealthiest and most popular cricket league globally, is now at the centre of a serious domestic controversy. Garima Tiwari has filed a case in a Kanpur court against Indian cricketer Amit Mishra, accusing him of dowry demands, physical and mental abuse, and incitement to suicide.

Garima, 35, a professional model, lodged her complaint with the Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division) Court in Kanpur. According to her allegations, since their marriage, Mishra and several members of his family have subjected her to repeated physical and emotional abuse. The accused include Mishra’s father Shashikant Mishra, mother Beena Mishra, brother Amar Mishra, sister-in-law Ritu Mishra, and sister Swati Mishra.

Garima claims that she met Amit Mishra through Instagram in 2019. After nearly three years of courtship, they married on 26 April 2021 at a club in Kanpur. Following the wedding, she alleges, Mishra and his family demanded a Honda City car and ₹10 lakh as dowry from her family. At the time of the wedding, her family could provide only ₹2.5 lakh, but the accused continued to pressure her for the remaining amount.

She further alleges that Mishra, often intoxicated, physically assaulted her, verbally abused her, and sometimes denied her meals. He allegedly confiscated the money she earned from modelling and frequently threatened her with divorce. The sustained abuse reportedly forced Garima to abandon her modelling career. At one point, she attempted suicide by ingesting phenyl, resulting in hospitalization.

Garima stated that despite filing multiple complaints with the police, no First Information Report (FIR) was registered, which she attributes to the influence of the Mishra family. Her lawyer, Kareem Ahmed Siddiqui, said, “Repeated complaints to the police yielded no action, leaving us no choice but to approach the court.”
