IRGC Intelligence Chief Killed in Strike

A senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) intelligence division, Major General Seyed Majid Khademi, has reportedly been killed in what Iranian authorities describe as a joint strike by the United States and Israel.

According to a report carried by Al Jazeera, citing Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, the IRGC confirmed in a statement that Khademi died in the early hours of Monday, 6 April, during what it called a “terrorist attack” attributed to US–Israeli cooperation. No further operational details regarding the location, method, or circumstances of the incident were released by Iranian authorities.

The announcement comes amid a rapidly escalating period of regional instability, with tensions between Iran, United States, and Israel intensifying significantly in recent months. Iranian officials have framed the incident as part of a broader campaign of coordinated strikes targeting senior security and military figures.

Tehran claims that the latest wave of hostilities began following a joint US–Israeli operation on 28 February, after which cross-border confrontations and retaliatory actions have expanded across multiple theatres in the Middle East. Iranian statements further allege that hundreds of casualties have resulted from the ongoing escalation, including senior political and military figures, although these figures have not been independently verified.

In response to previous attacks, Iran has conducted drone and missile strikes targeting Israeli territory, as well as areas in Jordan, Iraq, and other Gulf states hosting US military installations. Iranian authorities have also introduced restrictions affecting maritime movement through strategic waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz, signalling a broader willingness to exert pressure on global energy and shipping routes.

The killing of a high-ranking intelligence chief marks a significant escalation in the shadow conflict between the three states and raises concerns about further destabilisation across the region.
