US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will begin assisting in the movement of commercial vessels reportedly stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. The operation, scheduled to commence on Monday, has been described by the administration as a coordinated effort to support maritime transit through a strategically significant waterway.
Trump stated that the initiative, referred to as “Project Freedom,” was introduced following requests from unnamed countries whose vessels have been affected by ongoing disruptions in the strait. He characterised the impacted ships as non-combatant commercial carriers engaged in routine international trade.
In remarks posted on Truth Social, Trump said the United States had informed relevant states that it would provide navigational guidance to help their vessels exit restricted areas safely. He added that the objective was to enable uninterrupted commercial shipping and maintain efficient trade flows. According to his statement, the measure was intended to serve broader interests, including those of Iran, regional states, and the United States.
He further noted that several vessels were experiencing shortages of essential supplies, including food and other provisions required for crew welfare. Trump also warned that any interference with the operation would be met with a “strong and firm response,” though no specific measures were outlined.
The administration has not disclosed which countries formally requested assistance, nor has it provided detailed operational procedures. It also remains unclear whether any coordination with Iran will take place during the execution of the mission.
The US Central Command confirmed that support operations would begin on Monday. In a statement, it said it would assist commercial vessels seeking safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Commander Admiral Brad Cooper described the initiative as important for regional stability and the wider global economy, while also noting that enforcement of existing maritime restrictions would continue alongside the operation.
Iranian officials have rejected the announcement. Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Commission, stated that any US involvement in the area would be considered a breach of the ongoing ceasefire arrangement. He also criticised the US position in a statement posted on X, arguing that operational realities in the Gulf could not be altered through political messaging.
