Israel Watches Fate of 440kg Uranium

The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, coupled with nearly two weeks of sustained bombing campaigns, has yet to destabilise Iran’s political structure. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly weighing the prospect of ending the costly conflict swiftly. In this context, multiple Israeli security sources indicate that Israel had no concrete plan to induce political change within Iran at the outset of airstrikes. According to these sources, Israeli hopes that the strikes would spark street-level uprisings among Iranians were largely unfounded, as robust intelligence to support such expectations was lacking.

Current and former Israeli intelligence officials emphasise that the success of these operations now hinges on the future of 440 kilograms of enriched uranium. Since June of last year, following a regional escalation, this uranium has been stored underground in a secure location. Experts warn that this quantity could theoretically produce over ten nuclear warheads, allowing Iran to advance rapidly toward nuclear weapons capability if it remains within the country.

A senior former Israeli defence and intelligence official with extensive experience on Iran stated, “The 440kg of uranium is one of the clearest indicators of the conflict’s outcome. Whether the operation is ultimately deemed successful will largely depend on its status.” According to him, Israel faces two strategic choices: either secure the uranium outside Iran, or ensure the presence of a government capable of safely managing and safeguarding the material.

Hardline factions in Iran have long asserted that nuclear deterrence is the essential guarantee of the Islamic Republic’s survival. This perspective would be further reinforced if the current regime endures. Reports suggest that the United States is considering a high-risk military operation to seize the uranium, and prior diplomatic discussions even proposed that Iran transfer its enriched uranium to a third country.

A former Israeli official described the ongoing conflict as a “high-stakes gamble.” Should it succeed, it could fundamentally reshape the Middle East. However, if Iran maintains control of the 440kg uranium, a countdown toward nuclear weapons capability will accelerate.

Former deputy head of Israel’s Military Intelligence Research Division, Yoav Rosenberg, warned that continued Iranian possession of the uranium would render any Israeli victory a Pyrrhic one—a triumph that ultimately incurs strategic loss. In a social media post, Rosenberg asserted that if the uranium remains in Iranian hands, it would effectively amount to Israel’s defeat.

Concerns are heightened by the uncertain stance of Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, with experts noting that while Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s decision-making process was well understood, Mojtaba’s intentions remain opaque. Analysts believe he may push Iran more decisively toward nuclear weapons development. Although ongoing hostilities may temporarily delay progress, a politically driven decision could significantly escalate the threat to Israel.

Israeli supporters of the campaign hope that even if Iran’s government survives, its nuclear capabilities will be curtailed. To achieve this, they are reportedly prepared to accept long-term conflict risks, including potential escalation in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.
