It has been revealed when the ICC will respond to Bangladesh’s letter

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) remains in anxious anticipation of a response from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding its request to move the upcoming T20 World Cup matches out of India. The board is particularly hopeful that, should relocation be approved, Sri Lanka could serve as an alternative host. Otherwise, Bangladesh could face the prospect of exiting the tournament via walkovers against its four group-stage opponents. Sources suggest that, if all goes according to plan, the ICC may deliver its final decision by Monday. As of yesterday, the BCB had been awaiting an email from the ICC, but no reply had been received.

The controversy centres on the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) squad Kolkata Knight Riders, which Bangladesh has described as “disrespectful and unacceptable.” According to the BCB, the issue transcends the fate of a single player and touches upon national pride and the integrity of Bangladesh cricket. Consequently, the board has taken a firm stance, indicating that it will not compromise on participating in the World Cup on Indian soil under current circumstances.

A senior BCB director, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Jugantor, “At this stage, all we can do is wait with hope. That does not mean we will abandon our position. The ICC may still make a positive decision, giving us the opportunity to play.” The board maintains that if any alternative venues are arranged outside India, Bangladesh’s participation will be assured; otherwise, rules may force the team to forfeit its matches.

Political tensions and diplomatic strains have further complicated the situation. The Bangladesh Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently banned the telecast of the IPL, highlighting the wider impact of current geopolitical dynamics on sports. Former captain Tamim Iqbal urged the BCB to consider long-term consequences carefully, prompting a heated response from a BCB director who labelled Tamim “a proxy for Indian interests.” The incident drew strong criticism from current and former players, with the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWA) demanding an apology, though the director Nazmul Islam has refused to comply.

The ICC has been prompted to explore solutions, with Chairman Jay Shah scheduled to hold an urgent meeting with officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to resolve the standoff. Indian media, including NDTV, suggest the matter will not be easily settled. With the T20 World Cup set to commence on 7 February, the fate of Bangladesh’s participation remains shrouded in uncertainty, hanging on a delicate mix of player controversies, board positions, and pending ICC decisions.
