In a swift enforcement action in Brahmanpara Upazila of Comilla District, two young men have been sentenced to four months’ imprisonment each by a mobile court after being found guilty of assaulting their fathers in incidents linked to drug addiction and related financial disputes. The court also imposed monetary penalties on both individuals.
The mobile court was conducted on Monday (30 March) at midday under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate, Tarek Rahman. Authorities stated that the punitive action was taken following verified allegations of drug consumption, disruptive conduct, and domestic violence.
According to local residents and administrative officials, the spread of drug abuse among young people in the area has become an increasingly alarming social concern. The situation is further aggravated by the rising influence of online gambling and other addictive digital activities, which are contributing to financial instability and family breakdowns.
The convicted individuals have been identified as Shipon (23), son of Nurul Islam from Brahmanpara Sadar, and Rabiul Hasan (24), son of Mofizul Islam from South Tetabhumi village. Both were accused of engaging in drug-related activities and violent behaviour within their respective households.
Family testimonies revealed deeply distressing circumstances. Rabiul Hasan’s father, Mofizul Islam, stated emotionally that his son was once sent abroad in hopes of securing a better future. However, he reportedly became financially unstable overseas and later returned home, where he gradually became involved in drug addiction and online gambling. Despite repeated attempts by the family to rehabilitate him, his behaviour allegedly deteriorated further, culminating in physical assault when he was recently confronted during drug use.
Similarly, Nurul Islam, father of Shipon, claimed that his son had long been addicted to drugs and frequently stole household belongings to fund his dependency. He further alleged that his son had been involved in various local criminal activities, causing ongoing distress to the family.
The mobile court confirmed that sufficient evidence had been found regarding drug consumption and antisocial behaviour. Each accused was sentenced to four months in prison along with a fine. Officials emphasised that such immediate legal measures are intended to send a strong deterrent message to others engaged in similar activities.
A summary of the verdict is provided below:
| Name | Age | Father’s Name | Allegations | Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shipon | 23 | Nurul Islam | Drug use, domestic violence, theft-related behaviour | 4 months’ imprisonment + fine |
| Rabiul Hasan | 24 | Mofizul Islam | Drug use, online gambling, assault on father | 4 months’ imprisonment + fine |
Local administration officials added that drug dependency among young people is rising at a worrying rate in Brahmanpara Upazila. Over the past month alone, several similar cases have been handled through mobile court proceedings. Authorities and community leaders have called for stronger preventive measures, including family-level supervision, expanded awareness campaigns, and more robust anti-drug enforcement, to prevent further deterioration of social stability in the region.
