Jamaat Leader Expelled Over Alleged Sex Worker Shelter

In a decisive move, the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami in Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali, has expelled Abdul Halim, a prominent local leader, following allegations that he provided shelter to sex workers in his residence. The decision was announced on Monday, 22 December 2025, after a special Rokn meeting convened by the Upazila Jamaat.

Abdul Halim, a resident of Musulliyabad village in Latachapli Union, had long been active in the politics of Kuakata’s local Jamaat faction. He was previously known for presenting himself as an Olamah League leader, reflecting his influence in both religious and political circles.

At a press conference held at the local press club, Kuakata municipal Jamaat Amir Mohammad Shahidul Islam stated that the special Rokn meeting was attended by the top leadership of both the Upazila and municipal branches. “The meeting thoroughly reviewed the allegations against Abdul Halim along with corroborating evidence before taking organisational action,” he explained.

According to local and party sources, Abdul Halim had been conducting questionable activities under the pretext of renting out family apartments. He had been actively participating in Jamaat politics since 5 August of the previous year.

When approached for comment, Abdul Halim stated, “Six family apartments in my house are rented out. Two months ago, four women, posing as a mother and daughter, rented one of these units. What they do now is beyond my responsibility. I was expelled without prior discussion, and I believe my statement should have been taken before such a decision.”

Kalapara Upazila Jamaat Amir Maulana Mohammad Abdul Kaiyum emphasised the importance of adhering to party regulations. “This special Rokn meeting was called following a formal complaint. Membership in Jamaat-e-Islami requires strict compliance with organisational rules, and the decision was taken based on verified information,” he said.

The expulsion has sent ripples across the local political landscape, highlighting the party’s stringent stance on ethical conduct among its leaders.
