Jamaat MP Defends Gazi Nazrul, Calls Controversy Socially Unacceptable

Satkhira-2 lawmaker Muhaddis Abdul Khaleque has spoken publicly about the controversy surrounding Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4, arguing that the young woman involved had herself expressed a wish to remain unmarried elsewhere and to spend the rest of her life caring for him.

Speaking as the chief guest at a civic reception held at Gotaghata Mosque in Shibpur Union No. 5 of Satkhira Sadar Upazila at around 7pm on Thursday (23 July), Khaleque addressed the controversy surrounding his fellow MP as well as the position taken by Jamaat-e-Islami over the matter.

The reception was organised by local residents and religious scholars to honour Khaleque. During his speech, however, the discussion turned towards the allegations and public debate surrounding Gazi Nazrul Islam, with Khaleque offering an account of the circumstances from his perspective.

According to Khaleque, discussions had taken place with members of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s family before the matter was addressed. He said a meeting was held involving the MP’s first wife and other people concerned, during which the young woman’s position was also discussed.

Khaleque claimed that the young woman had made her wishes clear: she did not want to marry anyone else and wanted to devote the remainder of her life to serving Gazi Nazrul Islam. He said that, following her stated decision, arrangements for a marriage were made at the family’s own residence.

While presenting this account, Khaleque stopped short of giving the episode his unequivocal approval. He acknowledged that the matter had caused considerable social controversy and had consequently created political and organisational repercussions. In his assessment, the incident was socially unacceptable, or ‘anti-social’, but should not be directly characterised as immoral.

His comments come amid wider questions about the conduct expected of public representatives and individuals holding positions of influence. The controversy has moved beyond the private circumstances of those involved and has become a subject of political discussion because of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s position as an elected lawmaker and his association with Jamaat-e-Islami.

Khaleque said the party had taken disciplinary action against Gazi Nazrul Islam because of the social controversy and the organisation’s own principles. He also indicated that the MP’s parliamentary position was on course to be cancelled, although the precise legal and constitutional process governing any change to his status was not detailed in his remarks.

The Satkhira-2 MP also argued that the incident could not simply be dismissed as an ordinary personal mistake. Drawing an analogy with the conduct expected of a mosque imam, he said that the seriousness with which an individual’s actions are judged depends partly on the position and responsibilities that person holds.

In his view, society expects a higher standard of behaviour from people entrusted with religious or public responsibilities. Just as an imam is expected to maintain personal discipline and uphold standards of conduct, an MP is expected to demonstrate an even greater degree of responsibility, restraint and judgement because of the authority attached to public office.

Khaleque said this distinction was one reason why Jamaat-e-Islami had adopted a strict position in the case. He maintained that the organisation did not compromise when dealing with conduct it considered socially unacceptable or contrary to its principles.

At the same time, his remarks placed two competing aspects of the controversy side by side. On one hand, he highlighted the young woman’s alleged personal decision and stated that the matter should not automatically be described as immoral. On the other, he acknowledged the significant social reaction and defended the party’s decision to take disciplinary action against Gazi Nazrul Islam.

The episode has therefore raised broader questions about the boundaries between private conduct and public accountability. For elected representatives, personal decisions can attract political consequences when they become the subject of widespread public scrutiny, particularly when questions arise about social norms, ethical expectations and organisational discipline.

Khaleque’s remarks are likely to add another dimension to the ongoing debate over Gazi Nazrul Islam’s political future. His comments sought to explain the circumstances surrounding the controversy while also stressing that public figures cannot necessarily expect their conduct to be judged by the same standards applied to ordinary citizens.

The reception was chaired by Shibpur Union Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Moniruzzaman. Among those present as special guests were Shibpur Union Parishad chairman candidate Maulana Shahadat Hossain, district working committee member and upazila shura member Maulana Mosharraf Hossain, and Satkhira Sadar Upazila chairman candidate Shahid Hasan, along with other local leaders.

The controversy surrounding Gazi Nazrul Islam has consequently expanded from a discussion of personal circumstances into a wider debate over political accountability, organisational discipline and the standards expected of elected representatives. Khaleque’s statement has brought the issue back into public focus, particularly by combining an account of the young woman’s alleged wishes with an acknowledgement that the episode has generated substantial social and political controversy.
