A high-stakes intervention by a mobile court in the Bogra-6 (Sadar) constituency has led to the detention of a prominent local politician. On Wednesday, 11 February, Nasirul Islam, a high-ranking official within the Jamaat-e-Islami, was apprehended after allegedly making an unauthorised entry into a designated polling station under the cover of darkness.

The Nighttime Raid at Bhandari School
The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 pm at the Bhandari Girls’ High School centre. Acting on intelligence reports suggesting that a group of 10 to 15 individuals had breached the perimeter of the school, Executive Magistrate Palash Chandra Sarkar led a swift tactical operation.
Upon arrival, security forces intercepted the group, resulting in the detention of Mr Islam. According to administrative records, the detainee serves as the Secretary for Ward No. 2 of the Bogra Municipality branch of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Conflicting Accounts of the Incursion
The detention has sparked a war of words between local political factions and the administration. Mr Islam maintained that his presence at the school was purely administrative, claiming he had arrived to deliver a finalised list of polling agents to the election officials.
However, Magistrate Palash Chandra Sarkar categorically dismissed this justification. He clarified that under the current electoral framework, there is no provision that allows political operatives to enter a polling centre at night to submit documentation. The Magistrate noted:
“The law is explicit regarding the timing and procedure for administrative submissions. A nighttime entry by a large group is a breach of security protocols.”

Allegations of Political Manoeuvring
The incident has significantly heightened tensions in the Bogra urban area. Abdus Salam Tuhin, the Youth Wing Secretary for Bogra City Jamaat, has accused rival political activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of orchestrating the arrest.
Mr Tuhin alleged that while their workers were attempting a legitimate delivery of agent names, a “mob-like situation” was manufactured by BNP supporters to pressure the police into making an arrest. Conversely, local residents reported a volatile atmosphere as law enforcement worked to prevent a broader confrontation between the two groups.
Mr Islam remains in custody while senior officials deliberate on whether to file formal charges under the Representation of the People Order.
