A Jamaat-e-Islami worker was shot dead and another injured in a brazen gun attack in Chittagong’s Fatikchhari upazila on Saturday evening, highlighting rising concerns over targeted political violence in the region. The attack occurred around 7:30 pm in Shahnagar village, Leilang Union, at the edge of a local pond, police confirmed.
The deceased, Jamal Uddin, 38, was the son of the late Mohammad Yusuf from the Bashrat Ali Mistri household. The injured, Nasir Uddin, 35, was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and is currently receiving treatment. Authorities say his condition is stable, though he sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle) Md. Tarek Aziz, “Armed assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Jamal Uddin and Nasir Uddin near Jamal’s residence and fled immediately.” Eyewitnesses confirmed the attackers arrived on a motorcycle, discharged multiple rounds, and escaped before neighbours could react. Locals reported that Jamal was a well-known political figure in the area due to his Jamaat activities, which could have made him a target.
Police and community sources suggest that the attack appears premeditated rather than random, given the timing and location. “This was not an ordinary robbery or street crime; the assailants specifically targeted these individuals,” an officer stated. Local authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas and collecting evidence to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The attack has sparked concern among villagers and political leaders alike, with residents calling for increased security and faster action against those responsible. The incident underscores the continuing tension in parts of Chittagong, where political rivalries and local disputes have occasionally turned violent.
