Bangladesh’s film industry bid a tearful farewell to one of its most iconic figures, Ilias Javed, today. Revered as a symbol of the golden era of Bangladeshi cinema, Javed passed away, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable performances. His final visit to the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC)—the very grounds that bore witness to the heights of his illustrious career—was a poignant moment, as colleagues, directors, producers, and countless admirers gathered to pay their respects.
The BFDC compound was enveloped in grief when his body was brought there on Wednesday afternoon. Prominent figures from the film fraternity attended the ceremony, including celebrated actor Alamgir, leading man Uzzal, directors Dewan Nazrul and Delwar Jahan Jhantu, President of the Artists’ Association Misha Soudagar, actors Omar Sani and Joy Chowdhury, producer Khorshed Alam Khasru, dance director Aziz Reza, and many others. Guests reminisced about Javed both as a consummate performer on screen and as a deeply humane colleague off-screen.
His body was placed beside the BFDC mosque, where the first funeral prayer was performed. Amid tears, heartfelt tributes, and silent reverence, attendees shared their final moments with the beloved star. At 5:00 p.m., the procession departed BFDC en route to Uttara. Following a second funeral prayer, Ilias Javed was laid to rest at 6:35 p.m. in the 12th Sector cemetery of Uttara.
Javed’s cinematic journey began in 1964 with the Urdu-language film Nayi Zindagi. Although he made his debut as a leading man, it was the 1966 release Payel, opposite the acclaimed actress Shabana, that catapulted him to stardom. From that point, he became a household name, known for his versatility, charm, and powerful screen presence.
Over a career spanning several decades, Javed starred in numerous commercially successful and critically acclaimed films. His range was remarkable—from romantic leads to action heroes and complex family roles—leaving an indelible impression on audiences. Film scholars regard him as an artist whose performances defined an era of Bangladeshi cinema.
