Jazz Returns to Garden Stage

The Geelong Botanic Gardens will resonate with the vibrant sounds of jazz this February as its much-anticipated summer concert series makes a welcome return. Set against the lush greenery and historic landscapes of one of Victoria’s most treasured public gardens, the programme promises three open-air, family-friendly performances celebrating jazz, swing and big band traditions.

The series opens on 14 February with a performance by Melbourne jazz mainstays The Pearly Shells. Known for their spirited stage presence and irresistibly danceable repertoire, the group will appear in their seven-piece formation, aptly titled the “Hot Seven”. The ensemble combines a solid rhythm section with a three-piece horn line, delivering a rich, brassy sound that bridges classic swing and contemporary flair.

Formed three decades ago in Melbourne, The Pearly Shells have built a distinguished reputation on the Australian jazz circuit. Over the years, they have collaborated with some of the country’s most respected jazz musicians and frequently invite leading vocalists to join them on stage. Their performances are characterised by high energy, tight arrangements and a keen sense of showmanship.

Bandleader and bassist Steve Purcell explained the appeal of the group’s dynamic line-up. “We’re bringing the Hot Seven, which is our usual rhythm section with three horn players, so we’ll make a big racket with that — not quite a full big band, but plenty of horns,” he said. “Once you’ve got three or four horns, people pay attention. It’s a big sound, and it really fills the space.”

Following the opening concert, audiences can look forward to the Surf Coast Big Band on 22 February. Known for its expansive instrumentation and authentic big band arrangements, the ensemble showcases the bold brass and swinging rhythms reminiscent of the golden age of jazz. The series concludes on 28 February with Bob Sedergreen & Friends. Sedergreen, one of Australia’s most respected jazz pianists and educators, is celebrated for his improvisational mastery and decades-long contribution to the national jazz scene.

The concerts are designed to be accessible and inclusive, encouraging families and music enthusiasts alike to bring picnic rugs and settle in for relaxed evenings of live performance beneath the summer sky.
