Jennifer Lopez Opens Up About Post-Divorce Struggles

Jennifer Lopez has candidly revealed that she was “about to give up on it all” following her 2014 divorce from Marc Anthony, marking her third marriage to end.

Speaking during her Up All Night residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Friday, 6 March, the 56-year-old singer reflected on the months immediately after the split, describing them as “actually a really tough time.”

“I was really about to give up on it all,” Lopez said, addressing the audience, as clips of her speech circulated on social media. “I mean, I was a single mother with two three-year-old twins.” Lopez shares her 18-year-old twins, Max and Emme, with Anthony, now 57.

Amid the emotional turbulence, Lopez turned to advice from one of her mentors, the late self-help author Louise Hay. The guidance, she explained, was simple yet profound.

“She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’ I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And she said, ‘When you’re learning a dance and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?’ I said, ‘I just keep going until I get the steps right.’ And she said, ‘That’s right Jennifer. Always keep dancing.’”

Lopez then extended this philosophy to her audience, urging them to persevere through life’s challenges. “I wish the same for each and every one of you, that no matter what life throws at you, you dance and you dance and you dance. Again and again and again,” she said.

During her residency in December, Lopez had shared similar reflections, noting that she “really started getting good at dancing” following her third divorce—a period when her personal life “was a mess.”

Despite the difficulties of her separation from Anthony, Lopez has expressed gratitude for his role in building her confidence. Speaking to Sunday Today in 2018, she recalled that Anthony continually reassured her: “You’re a great singer. Don’t ever let anybody tell you you’re not a great singer.”

Years later, the two collaborated on her Spanish-language album Por Primera Vez, which Lopez said “actually repaired certain parts of our relationship that had been fractured from our marriage and our divorce and it made us friends again.” She explained on Spotify’s ¡Viva Latino! podcast in November 2017 that the collaboration reminded them of the musical connection that first brought them together.
