Jo Saldaña Makes History at the Box Office

Hollywood star Zoe Saldaña has officially become the highest-grossing actress of all time, following the release of her latest blockbuster, Avatar: Fire and Ash. The film has already amassed over $1.23 billion worldwide, cementing Saldaña’s unparalleled position in global cinema.

Remarkably, Saldaña is the only actress to have starred in four of the highest-grossing films globally, each surpassing the $2 billion mark. These include:

YearFilm TitleWorldwide Gross (Billion $)
2009Avatar2.92
2018Avengers: Infinity War2.05
2019Avengers: Endgame2.80

Beyond the Avatar franchise, Saldaña is widely recognised for her portrayal of Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. She has also received acclaim for her role as Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek reboot trilogy, which collectively earned over $1 billion worldwide.

According to The Numbers, the cumulative global box office revenue of all films featuring Zoe Saldaña now stands at $15.47 billion, surpassing Hollywood heavyweights Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson to claim the top spot.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Saldaña expressed gratitude to her colleagues, directors, and fans, stating, “This achievement is not mine alone. It belongs to the incredible films, the directors who believed in me, and the audiences who embraced these stories.” She gave special thanks to directors James Cameron, J.J. Abrams, Joe and Anthony Russo, and James Gunn, noting that Cameron, in particular, recognised a potential in her that even she had not fully realised.

Saldaña also addressed her global fans, emphasising, “Without your love and support, none of this would have been possible.”

The year 2025 has been particularly remarkable for the actress. In March, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Emilia Perez, becoming the first Dominican-American actress to receive an Oscar. She also earned accolades at the Cannes Film Festival, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Critics Choice Awards for the same role.

Currently reprising her role as Neytiri in the Avatar series, Saldaña is confirmed to return for Avatar 4 (2029) and Avatar 5 (2031), ensuring that her reign at the global box office is likely to continue for years to come.
