John Kabir, best known as the lead singer of the acclaimed Black Band, has continually reinvented himself across creative fields. While he has occasionally ventured into acting, it was his foray into hosting during the 2020 pandemic—particularly through a series of widely discussed podcasts—that brought him renewed attention. Now, Kabir has unveiled a fresh dimension of his artistic career: filmmaking. His short film, American Dream, marks his directorial debut.
Having settled permanently in the United States, Kabir directed and produced the film on American soil. The initial episode, lasting two and a half minutes, features a solo performance by actor Zayed Khan, who has also lived in the United States for nearly three years. The narrative explores the quiet struggles of expatriate life, capturing the emotional and financial challenges faced by individuals striving to support their families from abroad.
A recent photograph circulating on social media showed Khan moving wooden planks along a New York street, sparking speculation that he might be working as a labourer. The truth, however, was revealed shortly thereafter: the image was a still from American Dream. In the film, Khan portrays a construction worker who labours tirelessly throughout the week and even on his days off to ensure his family’s well-being, concealing his hardships to prevent their worry.
Despite past criticism of Khan’s acting, his performance in American Dream has drawn praise for its authenticity and emotional depth. The short film premiered last Friday at 7 PM Bangladesh time on the YouTube channel and Facebook page of the US-based media platform Thikana, quickly garnering positive responses from audiences.
Although this is Kabir’s first work as a director, he initially preferred to remain anonymous, crediting himself as “JK.” Yet, as public curiosity mounted following the release, his identity became widely known. Sharing a clip posted by Sad Al Amin, a student in the Film and Media Department in the United States, Kabir commented, “I wanted to stay behind the scenes. But for how long?” On his own social media account, he confirmed, “The secret is out. I am JK, the filmmaker.”
