Joint Forces Bust Suspected Arms Network

A late-night joint operation by Bangladesh’s security forces in Jashore has led to the detention of four members of a single family and the seizure of foreign-made firearms, ammunition, and a substantial cache of illegal equipment, in what officials describe as a major breakthrough against an organised arms trafficking network.

According to law enforcement sources, the family is closely linked to Arif Hossain, long regarded by investigators as one of the city’s leading illegal arms dealers. Although Arif Hossain himself managed to evade arrest during the raid, his wife and other close relatives were taken into custody.

The operation was carried out in the early hours of Saturday, 7 February, by a special unit from the Pulerhat Army Camp, acting on detailed intelligence reports. The team targeted a residence in the Barandi Mollapara area of Jashore city, believed to be used by Arif Hossain. The search lasted for approximately two and a half hours and was conducted under tight security, with the surrounding area cordoned off to prevent any suspects from fleeing.

During the search, joint police and army personnel recovered a significant quantity of weapons and other items. These included two pistols manufactured in the United States, along with magazines and live ammunition. Officials said the presence of foreign firearms sharply heightened the seriousness of the case, suggesting links to more sophisticated supply chains beyond locally made weapons.

In addition to firearms, the raiding team seized a wide range of items believed to be used in criminal activities, including sharp weapons, surveillance equipment, alcohol, and electronic devices. Investigators suspect that some of these tools may have been used both to carry out violent crimes and to monitor targets or evade law enforcement.

The detainees have been identified as Zakir Hossain Sagar (52) and his brother Joeb Hasan Sakib (55), sons of Abdul Awal Mistry, both residents of Barandi Mollapara. Also arrested were Arif Hossain’s wife, Lopa Khatun (32), and Zakir Hossain Sagar’s wife, Tahera Akter Tania (45). Arif Hossain was not present at the house during the raid and remains at large.

At around 4:00 am on Sunday, 8 February, the four detainees were handed over to Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station along with all seized items. Inspector (Investigation) Kazi Babul Hossain confirmed that separate cases under the Arms Act and the Narcotics Control Act are being prepared against the accused. He added that efforts to arrest the absconding Arif Hossain are continuing.

Law enforcement officials believe the operation has exposed a crucial segment of a larger illegal arms syndicate operating in the Jashore region. They expressed confidence that further investigation may uncover additional suspects and reveal wider networks involved in the trade.
