Joint Forces Seize Hundreds of Photocopied Ballots in Joypurhat

A joint operation by the Bangladesh Army and local police has led to the arrest of three individuals in the Kalai Upazila of Joypurhat. The arrests, made on the evening of Wednesday, 11 February, follow allegations that official ballot papers for the Joypurhat-2 constituency were being duplicated and distributed amongst political activists under the cover of a commercial enterprise.

Raid at Matrai Bazar

The operation took place at a stationery and photocopy shop located in the Matrai Bazar area. Acting on intelligence suggesting that a “master copy” of an official ballot paper had been obtained and was being mass-produced, the army first cordoned off the premises. Subsequent searches conducted by the police revealed a significant cache of duplicated electoral documents.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalai Police Station, Rafiqul Islam, confirmed that the duplicated materials were allegedly being funneled to local workers of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Confession and Seizure

During preliminary interrogation by the security forces, the shop owner, identified as Nirmal Chandra Sarkar (51), admitted to the illicit production. He disclosed that he had already produced 272 photocopies of the ballot paper. Following this admission, he and his two employees, Zohurul Islam (26) and Mostafizur Rahman (30), were taken into custody.

“Sample Ballots” or Sabotage?

The arrests have triggered a debate amongst local political circles. Some party activists, speaking on the condition of anonymity, defended the practice, arguing that the photocopies were merely “sample ballots” intended to educate rural voters on how to mark their choices correctly. They maintained that the intention was to prevent the inadvertent spoiling of official papers on polling day.

However, the administration has taken a far more severe view. Law enforcement officials categorise the duplication of official electoral stationery as a “sensitive electoral crime” that could lead to widespread confusion, double-voting, or the systematic undermining of the vote’s integrity.

OC Rafiqul Islam stated that the three suspects would be presented before the court on Thursday with a prayer for their incarceration. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the “original” ballot paper was sourced and whether any polling officials were complicit in the leak.
