An Indian woman has moved to Pakistan out of love, converted to Islam, and married her chosen partner, a development that recently drew official attention due to visa formalities. The woman, a practising Sikh named Sarbjeet Kaur, had originally travelled to Pakistan to attend a 10-day celebration marking the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.
According to sources cited by Geo News, Sarbjeet arrived in Pakistan on 4th November last year, with a visa valid until 13th November. However, she did not return to India after her visa expired. During her stay, she married Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura, Pakistan. Prior to the marriage, Sarbjeet voluntarily converted to Islam and adopted the name Noor Fatima.
To comply with immigration laws, Pakistani Rangers escorted her to the Wagah border, where formal procedures were completed before handing her over to Indian authorities. Her legal representative, Advocate Ahmed Hasan Pasha, told Geo News that Sarbjeet is returning to India of her own free will. He added that under the Foreigners Act of 1946, she could not legally remain in Pakistan beyond her visa expiry. Once the formalities are completed, she plans to apply for a spouse visa to return to Pakistan for permanent residence with her husband.
Sarbjeet and Nasir first met in 2016 via social media, gradually developing a friendship that blossomed into love. She affirmed in a Pakistani magistrate court in Sheikhupura last November that her conversion and marriage were entirely voluntary, with no external pressure involved. The court record confirms her desire to live with her husband. According to the Nikahnama (Islamic marriage certificate), Sarbjeet, aged 48, married Nasir on 5th November, providing a mahr (dowry) of 10,000 rupees, which has already been fully paid.
