Jubo Dal Activist Detained in Patiya Over Scandal

An activist of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal—the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—was detained by local residents in Patiya Upazila, Chittagong, following an alleged compromising encounter at the residence of an expatriate’s wife. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, 31 May 2026, within Ward 1 of the Kolagaon Union.

Visual recordings documenting the aftermath of the detention were subsequently circulated on social media platforms, triggering significant local attention and political discussions.

Details of the Incident and Community Confrontation

The detained individual has been identified as 37-year-old Mizanur Rahman Kafil, a Jubo Dal activist and the son of the late Solaiman, a former member of the Union Parishad (UP). According to claims made by local residents, Kafil had allegedly been involved in an extramarital relationship with the wife of an expatriate worker for a prolonged duration.

Upon his arrival at the woman’s residence on Sunday afternoon, local villagers cornered and interrogated him regarding his presence. Video footage obtained by journalists shows a crowd gathering amidst escalating tensions, with some individuals physically assaulting Kafil.

The viral video sequences show Kafil being dragged along by a group of local men. During the commotion, a woman was recorded departing the scene in a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw.

Arbitrated Settlement and Official Responses

Following the confrontation, a traditional community arbitration meeting (salish) was convened. The meeting was attended by Kafil’s family members, village elders, and local dignitaries to resolve the matter outside of the formal legal system. Kafil was subsequently released after approximately three hours, upon providing a formal written pledge (muchleka) to the community.

Addressing the controversy, Wahidul Alam Chowdhury Pibul, the former Member Secretary of the Patiya Upazila Jubo Dal, clarified that Kafil does not currently hold any executive or structural post within the youth organization, though he is widely recognized as a grassroots worker.
