Jubo League Member Stabs Wife Over Second Marriage

A shocking incident of domestic brutality has emerged from Netrokona, where a member of the local Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League, allegedly stabbed his wife in the face. The victim, Sony Akter, 35, was reportedly attacked after she protested her husband’s decision to enter into a second marriage without her consent. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (28 January) in Barkashia village, located within the Mohanganj Upazila.

Details of the Incident

The accused has been identified as Abdullah Al Mamun, also known as Mohammad Sohag Mia, 40, the son of Nur Ahmed and a resident of Barkashia. His wife, Sony Akter, is a mother of three and serves as an assistant teacher at a local school for the disabled.

The couple married in 2010 and share two sons and a daughter. According to local sources and the police complaint, the relationship soured when Sohag recently married another young woman in secret. When he attempted to bring the second wife into their shared home, the conflict escalated, leading Sony to move to a separate residence in Mohanganj town to escape physical abuse.

A Deceptive Meeting Turns Violent

On Wednesday morning, the couple met at a residence in Mohanganj to sign divorce papers by mutual consent. However, the situation turned life-threatening when Sohag allegedly attacked Sony. Eyewitnesses and the victim claim that Sohag strangled her with her scarf (orna) before dragging her into a rickshaw and forcibly transporting her back to his village home.

Upon arrival, he reportedly beat her severely before using a knife to slash her across the face. When Sony’s younger brother, Golam Morshed, arrived to intervene, Sohag allegedly assaulted him with an iron rod.

Legal Proceedings and Recovery

Following the assault, police rescued Sony and her brother. She was subsequently admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. “I have returned from the jaws of death,” Sony stated from her hospital bed. “If the police had not arrived in time, he would have killed me.”

In a brief statement, the accused, Sohag Mia, dismissed the allegations as “false,” claiming he had had no contact with Sony for six years. However, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohanganj Police Station, Mohammad Hafizul Islam Harun, confirmed on Friday that a formal written complaint has been received. “We are investigating the matter thoroughly, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings,” the OC remarked.

This case has highlighted the ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence and the misuse of political influence in rural districts. Under current laws in Bangladesh, a husband must obtain the formal written permission of his first wife and the local arbitration council before entering into a second marriage; failure to do so is a punishable offence.
