In a late-night operation on Wednesday, 24 December, a joint law enforcement team apprehended Tahrima Jannat Suravi (21), a wanted suspect popularly dubbed the ‘July Revolutionary’. Authorities allege that she orchestrated a series of fraudulent schemes while posting offensive remarks targeting senior government advisers and the head of the armed forces on social media.
The arrest took place at her residence in Gopalpur Tekpara, under Tongi East Police Station, Gazipur. Suravi is reported to be the daughter of local resident Selim Miah. Kaliaqair Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Nasir Uddin, confirmed the operation and stated that Suravi had an outstanding arrest warrant.
According to police sources, the charges against her include extortion, kidnapping for ransom, and blackmail. Furthermore, she frequently posted derogatory content aimed at the Chief of the Armed Forces, aggravating her legal standing.
Alleged Extortion of 25 Million Taka from a Gulshan Businessman :
Investigations indicate that a coordinated criminal syndicate, led by Suravi, extorted approximately 25 million Taka from a businessman in Gulshan by threatening to implicate him in cases related to the July movement. Police investigations suggest that this network has, over time, amassed roughly 5 billion Taka from various victims using similar tactics.
Threats over Murder Cases :
Further allegations reveal that the syndicate exploited fears of involvement in murder cases during the July–August movement in areas such as Gulshan and Badda. Victims were coerced into paying large sums through staged arrests, fabricated charges, and the promise of legal ‘settlements’.
Exploiting Viral Influence:
Tahrima Jannat Suravi reportedly presented herself as a coordinator of the “24th Mass Uprising” and a prominent activist of the July movement. She is known to have been a student at Bhawal Badre Alam Government College, Gazipur. Leveraging viral videos and live streams on social media, she allegedly cultivated connections with influential figures, subsequently using intimidation to secure money from them.
After her apprehension, Suravi was handed over to the police station and is expected to be formally presented in court following standard legal procedures.
