Ibrahim Ahmed Kamal, the veteran guitarist and founding member of Bangladesh’s legendary rock band Warfaze, has offered a reflective and deeply personal account of his four-decade-long journey in music, describing it as the greatest achievement of his life. In a recent social media post, Kamal revisited the milestones, struggles and quiet victories that have defined both his career and his identity as an artist.
According to Kamal, the years stretching from 1984 to 2026 feel “like a dream” when viewed in retrospect. That dream began to take shape in November 1983, when he bought his first guitar, driven by curiosity and an emerging passion for rock music at a time when the genre was still finding its footing in Bangladesh. Formal learning followed in 1984, and within just two years he had made his stage debut. By 1986, he was not only performing live but also earning his first income from music—an early sign that his commitment might be sustainable.
By 1987, Kamal had become an active figure in the local music scene. He performed regularly with different bands, recorded in professional studios, appeared on Bangladesh Television and collaborated with a range of artists. These experiences sharpened his skills and broadened his musical outlook. The decisive turning point arrived in 1988, when Warfaze began its successful journey as a band. The release of the group’s self-titled debut album in 1991 is widely regarded as a landmark moment in Bangladeshi rock history and remains one of Kamal’s proudest achievements.
Kamal has repeatedly credited his parents for allowing him the freedom to devote himself fully to music. He never had to pursue a conventional job, a rarity in a society where artistic careers often face scepticism. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that balancing education, family responsibilities, business interests, travel and a demanding musical life was far from easy. He believes, however, that the life he chose—surrounded by friends, bandmates and constant creativity—shaped both his personal happiness and his artistic voice.
In recent years, Kamal has faced profound personal challenges. The death of his father in 2024 led to a period of severe depression, during which music itself became difficult. Although he has since returned to playing, physical limitations mean he can no longer perform at the relentless pace of his earlier years. Instead, he now approaches music more slowly and thoughtfully, focusing on depth rather than speed.
Reflecting on his lifestyle, Kamal remarked that his greatest form of “insurance” was never having to work a routine job. This freedom enabled him to spend decades creating music, travelling within Bangladesh and abroad, and nurturing friendships that span 40 to 50 years. He considers the enduring music of Warfaze to be the finest outcome of those long-standing relationships.
Looking to the future, Kamal remains cautiously optimistic. Once visa-related complications are resolved, he hopes Warfaze will resume international touring. How far the band can go in the coming years, he says, remains to be seen.
