Last year, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepped away from T20 cricket following India’s World Cup triumph, later retiring from Test cricket as well. Despite fans’ disappointment at losing two of India’s greatest talents from the longer formats, both continue to make a significant impact in One Day Internationals.
In Ranchi yesterday, the pair treated spectators to a masterclass. Rohit contributed 57 runs, while Virat, after a gap of 280 days, scored his 83rd ODI century, helping India to a record 349-run total against South Africa. Their innings were a blend of elegance, precision, and strategic brilliance, reaffirming why they are regarded as two of India’s finest.
Captain Lokesh Rahul spoke highly of the duo: “Rohit and Kohli are invaluable. Their presence in the dressing room inspires confidence in everyone. Their experience helps guide the younger players. I’m thrilled to have them alongside us.”
At the post-match presentation, Rahul added, “Watching them bat is always thrilling. The freedom they play with is remarkable and has defined their careers. I’ve observed them closely for years; it’s always a joy to have them around in the team.”
Star spinner Kuldeep Yadav recalled his early days: “I began under Kohli’s captaincy. Today, watching him bat felt like stepping back to 2017–2018. He was spectacular, each shot executed with absolute confidence.” He continued, “Having him in the team is a blessing. He constantly offers advice, whether during bowling or fielding. His presence energises the entire squad.”
Young sensation Tilak Varma added, “Seeing Kohli’s century up close for the first time was extraordinary. He has consistently excelled in batting, fielding, and leadership for 17 years. It’s a privilege to learn from him directly.”
Kohli and Rohit’s performances demonstrate that experience, mentorship, and calmness under pressure remain vital for India, proving that even after stepping away from longer formats, they continue to be central to the team’s success and morale.
