Renowned Indian playback singer Kumar Sanu, widely celebrated as the ‘Melody King’ for his decades of chart-topping hits, has once again become the focus of media attention. This time, the controversy revolves around a deeply personal and sensitive matter concerning his former wife. Sanu has filed a defamation case against Rita Bhattacharya in the Mumbai High Court, seeking compensation of ₹30 lakh. In addition, he has requested that the court order the immediate removal of several controversial interviews given by Bhattacharya from social media platforms and other online portals.
The dispute comes nearly two decades after their divorce, highlighting how past relationships can resurface in the public eye. In multiple interviews, Bhattacharya has alleged that Sanu subjected her to severe physical and emotional abuse during their marriage. She further claimed that he failed to provide adequate support during her pregnancy, forcing her to sell personal jewellery to cover medical expenses and maintain her livelihood. Moreover, Bhattacharya asserted that Sanu engaged in extramarital relationships while they were married, allegations that have further fueled public scrutiny.
Sanu, however, has categorically denied all such accusations, describing them as both false and damaging. His legal team contends that Bhattacharya’s statements are seriously harming the reputation and goodwill he has painstakingly built over his forty-year career in the Indian music industry. Court documents indicate that Sanu asserts Bhattacharya is deliberately attempting to tarnish his public image. At the time of their divorce in 2001, both parties had signed a written agreement promising not to make any public allegations against each other—a clause Sanu claims Bhattacharya has blatantly violated.
The singer’s legal action extends beyond Bhattacharya herself, encompassing the digital platforms where these interviews were published. Notices have been issued demanding the immediate removal of the content, with warnings of criminal proceedings should the platforms fail to comply.
Earlier, in September, Sanu had attempted to resolve the matter amicably by sending Bhattacharya a legal notice. Receiving no response, he opted to escalate the case through the judiciary. The defamation suit has since sparked intense debate among Indian music enthusiasts and the wider public, with social media erupting in discussion. Supporters and critics alike have weighed in, making this latest development a fresh flashpoint in the ongoing scrutiny of Kumar Sanu’s personal life.
