Police in Kushtia have recovered the body of a newborn, wrapped in a sack, from a pond in Khagrabaria village of Kumarakhali Upazila. The grim discovery was made on Thursday at approximately 12:30 pm, shocking the local community.
Mohammad Ali, a member of Ward 4 of Panti Union, described the incident, stating that a large pond belonging to a local resident, Azizur Rahman, is located by the roadside. Earlier in the day, a group of boys were fishing by hand in the pond when one of them felt a heavy object in the water. Initially believing it to contain fish, they were horrified to discover the body of a female newborn inside the sack.
“The newborn weighed roughly two kilograms,” Ali said. “It appears that someone deliberately placed the baby in the sack and discarded it into the pond.” The news quickly spread, drawing a crowd of onlookers and creating considerable concern in the village.
Kumarakhali Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Jamal Uddin, confirmed that the police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Kushtia General Hospital for post-mortem examination. “At present, the identity of the newborn remains unknown,” he stated.
