Sequence of Events
Eyewitness reports indicate that the conflict began earlier in the day, around 9:00 a.m., when Ratan Sheikh, after consuming a soft drink, allegedly threw the bottle’s cap, striking a man named Kaset on the head. A verbal dispute escalated into minor physical altercations involving Kaset’s son Mamun and other villagers. Local residents initially intervened to calm the situation.
Tensions reignited late in the afternoon when Ratan Sheikh, along with Sardar Iarul Sheikh and Nasir Uddin, returned to the area armed with conventional weapons and firearms. They launched a sudden attack near the Ber Kalua mosque, targeting supporters of Alam Sheikh. Videos circulating on social media show chaotic scenes of over fifty villagers fleeing across farmland, many wearing helmets and wielding sticks, shields, and firearms.
Eyewitness Accounts
Rabbi Sheikh, speaking from the Kumarkhali Health Complex, said:
“This was a senseless act of violence. I have at least 22 bullets in my body. We demand justice for this attack.”
Alam Sheikh confirmed the sequence of events, noting that a minor morning altercation over a bottle cap had escalated into a premeditated armed attack. Locals expressed shock at how a trivial incident had spiralled into such extreme violence.
Police Response
Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin of Kumarkhali Police Station stated that the attack stemmed from longstanding rivalries between local groups. He confirmed that additional police forces had been deployed to maintain order and prevent further violence. While formal complaints had not yet been filed, authorities assured that legal action would follow once documentation is received.
This incident highlights the fragility of local security in Kushtia, where minor disputes can quickly escalate into deadly armed confrontations. Authorities and community leaders are urged to implement conflict-resolution strategies and stricter law enforcement to prevent future incidents.
