Kyiv Becomes Global Hub for Anti-Drone Tactics

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that eleven nations, including the United States, have formally requested Ukraine’s assistance in mastering electronic warfare (EW) and countering Iranian-manufactured drones. Following a high-level briefing with military and government officials on Monday, the President confirmed that Kyiv’s battlefield experience has become a vital commodity for global security.

The requests have originated from a diverse coalition, spanning the United States, several European allies, and—notably—nations neighbouring Iran. This shift highlights a significant reversal in the geopolitical dynamic: the “student” of Western weaponry has now become the “master” of counter-insurgency and high-tech defence.

Turning Experience into Influence

As the conflict with Russia enters its fourth year of full-scale aggression, Ukraine has transformed into a living laboratory for modern warfare. President Zelenskyy noted that the relentless deployment of Iranian “Shahed” loitering munitions by Russian forces has forced Ukraine to develop unique, combat-tested countermeasures.

“Ukraine is prepared to respond positively to those who have supported our freedom,” Zelenskyy stated. “Our experience in neutralising these specific threats is invaluable for the long-term security of our partners.”

Kyiv views this exchange not merely as a technical collaboration but as a strategic lever. By proving that Ukrainian expertise is essential for protecting Western assets, the administration hopes to bolster its bargaining power for continued military aid.

Defining the Electronic Frontline

A critical component of this collaboration involves Electronic Warfare (EW). According to military experts, EW is a sophisticated triad of electronic attack, protection, and support. Ukraine’s proficiency in this field has been honed by countering formidable Russian systems like the R-330Zh Zhitel.

The table below outlines the primary pillars of the Electronic Warfare expertise Ukraine is now sharing:

CapabilityTechnical FunctionReal-World Application
Electronic Attack (EA)Signal Jamming & DeceptionDisrupting VHF/UHF bands to sever enemy GPS and satellite links.
Electronic Protection (EP)Shielding AssetsHardening friendly communications against enemy interference.
Electronic Support (ES)Signal IntelligenceIdentifying and locating enemy radar or radio transmissions for targeting.

From the Dnieper to the Desert

Concrete steps have already been taken. President Zelenskyy confirmed to the New York Times that, following a request from Washington, Ukraine has deployed specialized drone-interception systems and an expert team to protect U.S. military bases in Jordan. This move underscores the global nature of the Iranian drone threat, linking the security of Eastern Europe directly to the stability of the Middle East.

While the President remained tight-lipped regarding the specific technical details of these agreements, he confirmed that “specific decisions and specialized assistance” are already being implemented for several of the petitioning nations.
