An elderly man has died following a violent confrontation triggered by a long-standing land dispute in Kendua upazila of Netrokona, highlighting once again the deep-rooted tensions surrounding property conflicts in rural communities.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, 7 April, in the southern part of Pijahati village under Maskha Union. The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Abu Sadek Bhuiya, son of the late Tajim Uddin of the same village.
According to local accounts, the dispute centred on ancestral land ownership, which had reportedly caused friction within the extended family for some time. Tensions escalated when Abu Sadek Bhuiya became involved in a heated argument with his younger brother, 47-year-old Firoz Mia, and his cousin, 42-year-old Mamun Mia.
What began as a verbal altercation soon spiralled into a physical confrontation, drawing in additional family members. The situation intensified further when Abu Sadek’s nephew, 18-year-old Junaid Mia, allegedly became involved in the clash, further destabilising the already volatile situation.
Witnesses said the confrontation quickly grew chaotic, with shouting and pushing escalating into a full-blown altercation in the village locality. During the incident, Abu Sadek Bhuiya suddenly collapsed on the ground. Locals rushed to his aid and transported him to Kendua Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival.

Local residents described the incident as deeply distressing, noting that the dispute had been simmering for years without effective resolution. Several villagers expressed concern that repeated disagreements over inherited land are increasingly leading to violent outcomes in rural areas, where formal mediation mechanisms are often limited or delayed.
Officers from Bangladesh Police confirmed that they had been informed of the incident shortly after it occurred. Kendua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehdi Maksud stated that preliminary findings suggest the altercation stemmed directly from a familial land dispute.
He further noted that although no visible external injuries were found on the body during initial examination, the victim collapsed suddenly during the confrontation and died at the scene or shortly thereafter. Authorities are currently awaiting a full post-mortem examination to determine the precise medical cause of death.
The body has been kept at the Kendua Upazila Health Complex pending completion of formal procedures. It will subsequently be transferred to Netrokona Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Police have confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, and further investigation will determine whether charges will be brought against individuals involved in the altercation.
Incidents such as this underscore a broader and persistent issue in rural Bangladesh, where unresolved land inheritance disputes frequently escalate into violence. Community leaders in the area have urged families to seek legal mediation rather than resorting to confrontation, warning that such conflicts often result in irreversible tragedies.
Authorities are expected to continue their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death while maintaining a visible police presence in the village to prevent further escalation of tensions among family members.
The investigation remains ongoing.
