Last Chance for Tax Filing

With the extended deadline drawing to a close, taxpayers across Bangladesh have until Tuesday to submit their income tax returns, marking the final opportunity after multiple deadline extensions this fiscal year. Authorities have emphasised that no further extensions are expected, placing urgency on individuals yet to comply.

The submission process is now entirely digital, administered through the platform managed by the National Board of Revenue. Taxpayers are strongly advised to ensure all required documents—such as income statements, investment records, and supporting financial papers—are prepared in advance to avoid last-minute complications.

Expanding Tax Base and Compliance

Bangladesh’s taxpayer base continues to expand steadily, with more than 12.5 million individuals currently holding Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs). However, not all TIN holders are required to file returns; only those with taxable income fall under mandatory submission rules.

Recent data from the National Board of Revenue highlights increasing adoption of the online system. Over 4.15 million taxpayers have successfully submitted their returns, while more than 5 million have registered on the e-filing platform, indicating a gradual shift towards digital compliance.

Filing Procedure Explained

To file a return, individuals must first complete registration on the official portal using a valid mobile number. For expatriate taxpayers, registration is facilitated via email-based verification. Once registered, users can log in securely and complete their returns by filling out detailed income tax forms.

The filing process requires disclosure of annual earnings and expenditures, followed by the calculation of taxable income after applying the tax-free threshold. Taxpayers may also include eligible deductions, such as investment-related rebates and other allowable reliefs.

In addition, individuals possessing assets exceeding BDT 5 million—or owning major assets such as property or vehicles—must submit a statement of assets alongside their return.

The online system also enables seamless tax payments. Users can settle their liabilities using bank transfers, debit or credit cards, or mobile financial services, including widely used platforms like bKash, Rocket, and Nagad.

Deadline Extension Facility

For those unable to meet the deadline, the system provides an option to apply for additional time. Taxpayers may submit a request for extension through the portal by selecting the designated ‘time extension’ feature before 31 March.

Applications are reviewed by the respective tax commissioner, who may approve an extension of up to 90 days. Approved applicants will be allowed to file their returns within the extended period without incurring penalties or additional charges.

As the final hours approach, tax officials are urging all eligible individuals to either complete their submissions promptly or formally request an extension, ensuring compliance and avoiding unnecessary financial consequences.
