Leadership Crisis Deepens in Bangladesh Cricket

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is facing an escalating leadership crisis amid an unprecedented wave of resignations from its board of directors, raising questions about internal stability and governance just months into the current administration.

Following a marathon board meeting lasting approximately six and a half hours on Saturday, three directors—Faiyazur Rahman, Shanjan Tanim, and Mehrab Alam Chowdhury—formally stepped down. Their departures add to a growing list of exits that has now reached seven members within less than six months since the formation of the present board led by President Aminul Islam Bulbul.

Although most departing directors have cited “personal reasons” for their resignations, speculation continues to swirl regarding deeper structural and political tensions within the organisation. The rapid turnover has fuelled concerns over governance continuity and the effectiveness of ongoing cricket development initiatives in the country.

In response to the mounting uncertainty, BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul has strongly defended his position and the resilience of the current leadership. Speaking to a television interview following the meeting, he stated that he intends to remain in office regardless of the challenges ahead. “I will be the last person to go,” he declared, signalling his determination to stabilise the board amid turbulence.

He further alleged that the board has been operating under continuous external pressure since taking office. According to him, meaningful and uninterrupted work has been nearly impossible over the past six months. However, he did not provide specific details regarding the sources or nature of this alleged interference.

Despite these claims, Aminul Islam Bulbul maintained that he is not fully aware of the exact motivations behind the resignations of individual directors. This lack of clarity has further intensified speculation about internal disagreements and possible factional divisions within the board.

The situation has placed the BCB in a delicate position at a time when sustained administrative consistency is considered essential for long-term cricket development, particularly in areas such as domestic structure reform, player welfare, and international performance strategy.
