“Let it end this way; I didn’t want it.”

Jack Grealish’s season has been brought to an abrupt and unwelcome halt following a serious injury sustained in January. The 30-year-old English winger, on loan at Everton from Manchester City, suffered a stress fracture in his foot during Everton’s 1–0 victory over his former club Aston Villa on 18 January. The injury necessitated surgical intervention, leaving Grealish to issue an emotional statement reflecting on the premature conclusion of his campaign.

Sharing his thoughts on Instagram, Grealish wrote:
“I didn’t want the season to end like this—but that’s football. It’s incredibly frustrating. The surgery has been completed, and now my full focus is on recovering as quickly as possible. I am determined to return fitter, stronger, and better than ever.”

The injury also eliminates any possibility of Grealish featuring in England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup. There had been speculation about his potential return to the national team following recent performances for Everton. Under interim England coach Lee Carsley, Grealish last appeared in the national jersey in October 2024.

Grealish’s club career has been marked by high-profile transfers and notable successes. He joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a reported £100 million. Since then, he has won three Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and an FA Cup. However, during the previous season at City, Grealish was largely on the periphery of Pep Guardiola’s plans, starting only seven league games and being left out of the squad for the Club World Cup in the United States. This prompted his loan move to Everton, where he has become a key figure this term.

In the current season, across all competitions, Grealish has made 22 appearances for Everton, contributing two goals and six assists before his injury curtailed his campaign.

Reflecting on the support he has received since joining Everton, Grealish added:
“The support I’ve received at this incredible club has meant so much to me. The coaching staff, my teammates, and especially the supporters have been phenomenal, and I am truly proud to represent this club. I will do everything necessary to return to the pitch as soon as possible, and until then, I will continue to support the team in every way I can. Thank you all again for the love—it really means a lot to me.”
